Additionally, this section shall be comprised of the plot of the novel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"The Merchant of Veniceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬. In the second stage, the character, theme and setting of the novel shall be provided in details while at the third stage, a critical reception and my personal response shall be bestowed.Stage OneWilliam Shakespeare was a man who was born in April 23, 1564 at Stratford upon- Avon. His father John Shakespeare worked on wool and leather. William Shakespeare is extensively acknowledged as one o f the worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s greatest playwrights of the English language. His works together with his personality has been adored by several actors, scholars and everyday people across the world. The main reason why William Shakespeare has been admired greatly over the hundreds of years is because he put forward exhilarating stories that up to date are still relevant (Dobson, Wells 59).Young Shakespeare grew up under a thatched roof and attended a public school where he was learned Scriptures, Latin and logic. In 1582, William Shakespeare married Anna Hathaway when he was only 18 years old. Shortly afterwards, this couple had their first child Susannah. Later, they had two more children who were twins namely Hamnet and Judith, who were born in 1585. At the age of 11, Hamnet contracted the Black Plague and died in1596 (Dobson, Wells 60).There are varying theories that elucidate what Shakespeare did as young man. One of these hypothesis state that, he was ran away to the London. It was in this place that he took up a job as horse attendant for the people who attended theaters. Other people believe that he was a teacher in a local school at Italy. Nonetheless, William Shakespeare is initially mentioned by Robert Greene, who is a playwright, in London at the year 1592. Robert Greene describes Shakespeare as a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"young upstart Cowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Moore 7).The plays of Shakespeare were widely acknowledged that his business enterprise became the official theater organization of the Lord Chamberlain. The firm also performed frequently for Queen Elizabeth 1. After the death of Queen Elizabeth 1, the new king requested Shakespeare organization to be his is formal theatre company. The king later changed the name of the organization to Kingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s Men. At intervals, Shakespeare also took small roles in his plays. He together with some of his friends later opened their own theatre famously known as The Globe (Moore 8).The genesis of his stories was based on his busy bustling life in London where he often referred to the history put forward by Raphael Holinshed known as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"The Chronicles of England, Ireland and Scotlandà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬. This discourse was first published in 1577. During the course of his career, William Shakespeare wrote over 37 plays. In addition to that, this author has written over 154 renowned love sonnets as well as long poems. His writings were such that, it was comprised of the intensified intimacy of a poet and the sweeping vision imbued by a storyteller. He died at the age of 52, in the year 1616 (Moore 11).Point of ViewAll though most works of literature highlight the authorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s point of view, they do not all have a narrator and/ or a narrative voice through which stories are tied together. In the novel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"The Merchant of Veniceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬, a narrator whose voice or eyes the audience can learn from is not presented. The form style of writing that is utilized by William Shakespeare in th is novel is the use of imagery, symbolism and allegory. For instance, the article uses several rings i.e. the turquoise ring that Jessica steals from his father Shylock, which presents a priced possession of Shylock since it was bestowed to him by his late wife. The loss of the ring also illustrates the loss of his prized possession (his daughter, Jessica to the Christians). There is also Portiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s ring which signifies her love and commitment to Bassanio. Other features of symbolism, allegory and imagery of the play is illustrated by various aspects such as the gold, silver and the lead caskets, the lottery, the transforming music sang by Portia, the story of Jacob and Laban, etc. (McMenomy 33).Plot AnalysisThe initial situation of the novel illustrates Antonioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s love for his best friend Bassanio, and the game of caskets stipulated by Portiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s father. As the novel commences everything is in a restless place. In Venice, Antonio is shown to be sad because of losing his ships that was filled with goods. Additionally, it is insinuated that the character is also sad because he perceives that he is about to lose his friend Bassanio, to Portia. At the meantime, Portia is not in her natural mood because she has lost her father. The biggest problem with the demise of Portiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s father is that he has stipulated an awful lottery set up for anyone who wants to woo her. This puts a hurdle for her to choose a suitor of her choice (Harold 23).The novel is followed by conflict where poor Bassanio needs the help of Antonio in wooing Portia. Since Antonio has lost his goods to the tempest he is forced to turn to Shylock who is money lender hated because he was a Jewish. In order to get the financial assistance, Antonio is forced to sign away a pound of flesh as a form of guarantee on Bassanioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s loan. When Bassanio visits Portia house, he is faced with the dilemma of choosing a casket or never to visit Portia again. Tortured by the levels on uncertainty, he insists on playing the game of caskets as soon as possible. Luckily for Bassanio he is able to choose the right casket and he finally gets a go at Portia (Harold 24).No sooner had Bassanio won Portia, than he received a letter that divulged the sad fate of Antonio. From the letter, Bassanio learns that his ventures had failed and that Shylock was insisting for a pound of flesh. Unlike the initial time when Shylock seemed to be joking about asking for the pound of flesh as a surety for loan, Shylock seemed enraged. His anger is further fostered by the fact Jessica had eloped stealing more of his money. Having resigned to his fate, Antonio requested his friend Bassanio to go and see him before he dies. This complicates Bassanioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s capacity to go on with the wedding preparations. He thus set forth an expedition to Venice so as to visit his friend. The complication of this scenery is further heightened by Portia, and his maid servant Nerrisa who cross dress themselves as men in disguise to follow Bassanio and see how they could assist them ((Harold 33).The Duke of Venice offers Shylock 6,000 ducats, which is double the amount of loan he bestowed to Antonio. Shylock insists on a pound of flesh from Antonio preferably from his heart. Since the Duke of Venice is out to protect Antonio, he introduces the court to a visitor known as Balthazar. Portia, who acts as Balthazar, a doctor of law, presents a letter to the court that had been written by the known lawyer, Bellario recommending him to pass justice to the case. Balthazar is accompanied by a law clerk, Nerrisa who is also in disguise. After severally pleading with Shylock to show mercy to Antonio, he grants Shylock the permission to claim the pound of flesh (Harold 37).According to Shylock, he insists on "specific perfomance" as highlighted by the contract. He stated that the contracted only pointed out a pound of flesh, so he insisted he would take a pound of flesh from whereve r he pleased i.e. Antonioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s heart. With the same measure, Balthazar insisted that the contract stated that Shylock could only take a pound of flesh and not blood. Thus, he stated that if Shylock shed a drop of blood from Antonioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s body not only would his goods be ceased but also his land. Shylock ultimately accepts the initial offer of 6000 ducats; Balthazar however refuses to grant this request stating that he had refused the offer in an open court (Harold 39).Later, half of Shylockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s wealth was granted to Antonio as stated by the Venetian law since an alien (shylock) threatened the life of a citizen. The play ends up when both Portia and Nerrisa reveal their true identities and presenting a letter that accounts their role in the court. The entire drama ends in a relative harmony when all the marriages are consummated (Harold 47).Stage TwoCharacterIn novel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"The Merchant of Veniceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is comprised of several characters. One of these characters is Shylock, who is the Jew who lent money to Antonio for Bassanioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s loan. Similarly, Shylock is Jessicaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s father. The second main character is Antonio, who is an affluent Venetian merchant, Shylockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s arch enemy and Bassanioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s best friend. Portia is an affluent and beautiful lady who leaves in Belmont. She is an heiress to her fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s fortune. In the novel, Bassanio is Antonioà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s best friend. He asks money from him in order to woo Portia. Jessica is the other character in the novel, who is Shylockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s daughter. She is displayed as the girl who broke his fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s heart by marrying Lorenzo who is a Christian (Kenneth 15).Lorenzo, is a friend to both Bassanio and Antonio. He is also the man who hit the jackpot when he finally elopes with Jessica. Graziana also known as Gratiano is a party animal who is also a friend to both Bassanio and Antonio. He is also the...

What Creates a Current Account Balance

The Economics Dictionary defines the balance of the Current Account as follows: The current account balance is the difference between a countrys savings and its investment. [If the current account balance is] positive, it measures the portion of a countrys saving invested abroad; if negative, the portion of domestic investment financed by foreigners savings. The current account balance is defined by the sum of the value of imports of goods and services plus net returns on investments abroad, minus the value of exports of goods and services, where all these elements are measured in the domestic currency. In laymans terms, when a countrys current account balance is positive (also known as running a surplus), the country is a net lender to the rest of the world. When a countrys current account balance is negative (also known as running a deficit), the country is a net borrower from the rest of the world. The U.S. current account balance has been in a deficit position since 1992 (see chart), and that deficit has been growing. Thus the United States and its citizens have been borrowing heavily from other countries such as China. This has alarmed some, though others have argued that it means eventually the Chinese government will be forced to raise the value of its currency, the yuan, which will help alleviate the deficit. For the relationship between currencies and trade, see A Beginners Guide to Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Why Is Smoking Bad - 1199 Words

Why is smoking bad? Smoking is one of the most common problems today that are killing people all around the world. It is a terrible habit and shouldn’t be done. Even though people claim that it relaxes you, helps relieve stress, and helps boost your mood. The negative things of smoking definitely overcome the positives of smoking. Cigarettes are harmful to everyone especially older people and children. Cigarette smoking has so many health problems in them it’s ridiculous. It’s a major cause of lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, bronchitis, diabetes, and so much more. There are three major things in cigarettes and that’s tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine. When a smoker inhales the smoke of a cigarette 70% of the tar stays in the lungs†¦show more content†¦It’s terrible and they just don’t get that. Also sometimes teenagers just happen to be raised in that type of environment so they don’t know any better. Some of them just want attention so they’re going about it by smoking. Coming from my point of view I think it is in fact stupid to think smoking cigarettes is cool, and to ever start doing it. Some teenagers don’t understand the serious health risks they are causing themselves. Smoking is a very bad habit and should be stopped by people. If someone doesn’t want to stop for themselves then stop for other people. For example, say you’re smoking and theirs some child near you. They are breathing in much of that smoke and its causing them about as much harm as its causing you. It†™s not just younger people either, for instance more older women who tend to smoke get more hip fractures, and get injured a lot more. Smoking effects are different for each person who smokes depending on what’s in the cigarettes. Smoking happens to not only be a health issue but a financial issue also. Until we stop smoking more people more people are going to get sick, more people are going to get addicted, and more people are going to cause much pain to their loves ones who are going to have to deal with their loss. Internal strength in the college expense reimbursement process As according to the case Queensland Agriculture College /head has official statements of policies and procedures for staffs expense reimbursement. Expense reports must be signed /approved by head and finance authority. Approved expense report of staff reimbursement and cash advance forms makes easy to record all authorized transactions. Expense reimbursement checks are issued by head of department.(duly signed authority) Expense reimbursement are made only after receipt of approved expense report and cash advance approval form for anticipated expenses. Internal audit reconciles the expense reimbursements. College has made a proper hierarchy to signed the reimbursement of expenses and further it is checked and signed by financial department of college. All the transactions are recorded and receipts of cash payments are with finance office , in case any issue arise in future they can check it from the records. There is well detailed procedure to receive cash advances for anticipated expenses. Staff has to complete and get approved a cash advance approval form, it further goes to accounting department for verification , so there is two way verification of every expenses(Rausch 2015). Internal Audit compares expense reimbursement checks with expense report from each departments net amount to the total of the expense reimbursement issues to staff. Auditing of reimbursements makes sure that college policies and rules are being followed properly and reimbursements are being checked closely time to time(Steinbart B 2014). There is a sense of insecurity with data as data is somewhere on the internet because its a online business accounting software and data is saved online somewhere on data, so hackers always have chance to attack the online data. Weaknesses in internal expense reimbursement process There is no limit on the staffs total fortnights expenditures or cash advances. Expense reimbursement checks are sent to the college head for the distribution rather than to the cashier. The head of the college doesnt keep a copy of expense report and other cash advances for auditing purposes. Before approving the expense advance expenditures he should discuss it with finance department of the college so that he can get the in-depth view of expenses, and he understands well that there is no space for fraud. There should be a well establishes relationship between finance department, accounts department , head and cashier so that they can co work properly and handle the things smartly. The expense report is not checked for mathematical accuracy. So there may be chance if someone could try to make a fraud and make wrong or more entries in the form. A copy of the Cash Advance Approval form should be sent to the college Cashier so it can compare it with the one submitted by the staff(Hall 2011). If in case some member offended and violating college rules, they made for expense reimbursements, they should be punished, so that in future staff members should be aware that college is strict about its policies. There is no reconciliation of college Cashier disbursements with Cash Advance Approval form. They did not mention what kind of documents are required to attach with expense form , there should be original documents to be attached(Samuel 2013). What are the contrasts between Blanche and Stanley in A streetcar named desire Essay Example

What are the contrasts between Blanche and Stanley in A streetcar named desire Paper Blanche and Stanley are at juxtaposition towards each other, there is a conflict between them that goes beyond simply disliking one another. One of the explanations for this is that Blanche comes from a very different world to Stanley. In many ways Stanleys represents new America whereas Blanche represents the old, America. This contrast of hard working, manual labour against well mannered, chivalrous and delicate is one of the very first conflicts of culture. In a way Blanche represents the old south, which in history supported slavery. We can see Blanche representing the confederacy, the posh upper class slave owners and Stanley as the would-be slave, resentful of his treatment from the South and by Blanche. Another contrast is the animalistic natures of the two characters. In many ways Blanche is like a moth. Her delicate nature and fragility invoke images of the cover of the book. Stanley is more like a bear, a heavily territorial creature that will fiercely protect its mate. Further evidence that Blanche is like a moth can be seen in her behaviour. Moths never really stay in one place; they flit from place to place, and in Blanches case from one danger to another. Blanche often seeks out the light because of what she lost, even though it hurts her. The flamingo hotel is one example of this; the young man is another. She seeks to find that spotlight that will light up her world again and risk herself in the process. Stanley on the other hand does not have the capacity for those feelings. He wears bold, primary colours such as red and green and purple, which convey his animalistic passion whereas Blanche is not motivated in this way. Relying often on the ethereal illusions of the mind. This is perhaps what frustrates Stanley; Blanche is nothing substantial, she is almost devoid of reason. This goes against Stanleys perceptions about the world, that everything is black and white and that you are either friend or foe. Much like in nature. In many ways Blanches character is something of a contradiction, she seeks out new love in order to find what was lost, and yet she has not looked inwards at herself to question her own actions much. She regrets telling Alan that he disgusted her and she defends her picture of him in an act of defiance against Stanley. This contradicts my point earlier about her only believing in the ethereal. Because in order to counter Stanleys passion you have to fight fire with fire and be passionate yourself. So perhaps deep down Blanche is more like Stanley. She is heavily territorial regarding Alan and protective of his memory. Something which reflects in the name of the book A streetcar named desire Blanche in effect believes the world is illusionary, but her desire forces her to accept some things are real and like a streetcar she has no choice abut changing course. The things she accepts as real [IE Her love for Alan] she will defend fiercely. Stanley on the other hand has formed a very hunter-gatherer relationship with Stella. She is like a trophy, a symbol of something he has conquered with his passionate tendencies. They fall out and fight it seems on a regular basis, but they are inexplicably attracted back to each other. The contrast then can be seen in Stella as well as Blanche. Stella is more down-to-earth, more like Stanley than her sister. She accepts certain facts whereas Blanche fabricates ways around them. Stanley also resents Blanche because of her reliance of the imaginary. His perception of the world puts him as the alpha male, women should be attracted to him and in return he can control them through force. Blanche seems to be immune to this, looking down her nose at him and not succumbing to lust. I imagine Stanley has not encountered this from women before. Stanley not only believes in reality, he is reality. He is the hard knuckled, nature driven man and Blanche is the white, ethereal spectre, which fades in and out of reality. In that respect the characters are very much in two different worlds with two different beliefs. Going back to the moth idea, Blanche moves from place to place on impulse. Impulse can be described as the single track, single path nature of a streetcar carriage. She talks about fabricating lies to attract men she has had previous relations with, she does not wish to lose face despite already having lost most of it in her hometown of Laurel. Quite clearly Blanche has not got quite a sound mind, because it seems to fabricate reality to what suits her. She still believes she is a lady of upper-class nature, but she has essentially tainted herself through her activities at the flamingo. She bathes a lot, and this frustrates Stanley. He works in the grease and muck and does not see it necessary to clean himself as often as Blanche, and yet she washes herself constantly. Blanche characteristically dresses in white, the purest form of light. When she bathes she is cleansing herself. I think that she might be trying to cleanse the blood of her dead husband from herself. Stanley does not seem to have been through the emotional trauma that she has, and so cannot understand how she feels. When you murder someone, directly or otherwise, it sticks in your mind and Blanche has convinced herself of her responsibility towards his death. In summer then, Blanche shares a few passionate similarities with Stanley. Her perception of reality is similar to Stanleys when it comes to love. However she surrounds herself with the false and the fake, to comfort herself and to try and cleanse her body of the taint that surrounds it.

Free Essays on Rose O’Neal Greenhow

CIVIL WAR PASSAGE ANALYSIS Rose O’Neal Greenhow This letter from Rose O’Neal Greenhow to Colonel A. R. Boteler, dated July 20, 1863, reveals much about the social history of the Civil War, specifically the role of women during this period. Throughout history, women have always been thought of as inferior to men. When women are mentioned in the Civil War, most people only think of nurses and of women performing menial domestic tasks such as cooking and cleaning. However, in the passage we can see that in some cases, women actually played major roles in determining the future of our nation. For instance, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, a spy for the Confederate Army, was accredited by the president of the Confederate Union, Jefferson Davis, with winning the Battle of Manassas. It is also believed that the secret message she delivered to General Beauregard caused him to ultimately win the battle of Bull Run. Her case is also unique because it is obvious that both General Beauregard and Colonel Boteler thought of Greenhow as more of an equal than was common in their time. In the letter, Greenhow tells us that Beauregard gives her a permit to visit Fort Sumter, an obvious indication of trust in the fellow secessionist. Also, the language that Greenhow uses throughout the letter to the Colonel implies that they were more than just colleagues supporting the same cause, but friends. Greenhow says to Colonel Boteler, "†¦the weather is delightful. I wish with all my heart that you were here†¦" and closes her letter with, "With my best regards believe me always your friend,". This informal language shows us that some women were as respected and revered as men during the Civil War.... An account of the revolution followed by the coup in egypt with Assignment

An account of the revolution followed by the coup in egypt with elements of the corruption involved in government activities and how they have effected tourism - Assignment Example China experienced widespread student protests in Beijing on June 4 1989, because of the unrest, the population of tourists in hotels was low and travel to Beijing was highly restricted. A double military coup occurred in Fiji in 1987, other countries responded by issuing travel advisories to their citizens. Israel has for a long time been involved in military warfare making it inhospitable for tourists. Therefore, the case in Egypt is not different, the revolution, the coup and prevalent corruption have had diverse effects in the country. The revolution occurred in 2011, followed by the coup two years later in 2013. The Egyptian revolution was marked by mass protests on the streets. Clashes turned bloody resulting in the death of at least 300 people23. Egyptian nationals were pushing for the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak. Grievances included political issues; economic strains, unemployment, inflation and injustice. The demands were finally met on February, 11th 2011 when President Mubarak put an end to his thirty year old regime by stepping down11. The July 2013 coup came immediately after widespread protests by Egyptian citizens against President Mohamed Morsi. People demanded that Morsi be removed from power, his term in office had lacked success. Coups have never been peaceful. As a result, forceful intergovernmental transition would bring all economic activity to a standstill26. Contrary to the expectations of many Egyptians, the coup led to more problems. From the time of Morsi’s overthrow from power, Egyptians were left fighting for the formation of a legitimate government that would replace military rule. Public servants have been involved in constant revolts over the fact that the government has failed to fulfill its minimum wage promises1. These facts caused negative effects on the country’s revenue-generating sectors, a major constituent being the tourism industry. Inflation became a major economic problem and the rate of unemployment

Description of a Response Journal Essay Example for Free

Description of a Response Journal Essay Journals provide learners with an opportunity to record their personal thoughts, emotions, ideas, questions, reflections, connections, and new learning on what they hear, view, read, write, discuss and think. â€Å"What we as educators want is that their writing enable students to personalize a story and gain insights about the character, to help them reflect, and to help them see the world in a different way.† (Brownlie, 2005) â€Å"Our reflections are the making of deeper meaning and richer understandings. Our reflections are our dreams, our ideas, our questions, our initiatives, our visions – our journeys of lifelong learning and teaching. † (Schwartz Bone, 1995) Why are Response Journals an effective reading strategy? Response journals allow the students to â€Å"remember to hold on to their thinking† about what they are reading. (Zimmermann, 1997) Response journals are easily implemented at all levels. They can be used to target specific outcomes of the Provincial ELA Curriculum. Response journals can be used with any genre of literature (poetry, short stories, media text, novel studies) and in different content areas that use expository text. When should Response Journals be introduced? Response journals should be introduced as soon as possible using scaffolding such as sentence frames or prompts to start. The goal should be to have students enter the middle years feeling comfortable with recording their responses to reading with little or no scaffolding. How can I ensure student success? Choose poetry, stories or books with enough depth to elicit responses. Students should have the opportunity to discuss the reading before ever being asked to write a response. Use of the â€Å"Say Something† strategy (Brownlie, 2005) creates an atmosphere of acceptance and trust. Modeling, scaffolding, building criteria with students and practice with feedback are the most important tools for improving the quality of responses. Scaffolding is the use of a variety of starters, frames and graphic organizers to allow students to develop thoughtful responses. If needed, open ended prompts may be used for some students. (See Appendix) Modeling is critical to the success of student journal writing. Teachers need to model their thinking about a selected piece of text and how that thinking can be used to form a written response. This needs to be done regularly throughout the year with a variety of texts and responses. Students require frequent practice in the various forms of journal writing. The teacher must provide feedback based on criteria that has been developed with the students. This practice with feedback allows students to monitor their growth and set goals for future journal responses. What are the different formats for Response Journals? (See Appendix for examples) 1. Double Entry Journal This is the most common response journal. The page is divided in half lengthwise. One side refers to a specific piece of text in the form of a quote or a summary. The specific text may target a literary strategy, technique or element of the author’s craft. It may also elicit a personal response such as a connection, feeling or opinion. The other side targets the students’ thoughts regarding the selected piece of text. 2. Diary Entry In this style, the student writes from the point of view of one of the characters. It should include what the character might be thinking or feeling. 3. Illustration Students draw or illustrate a specific scene using thought bubbles or captions to show the character’s thoughts and feelings or demonstrate the scene’s importance. (Brownlie, 2005) 4. Interview The student makes up questions they would ask one of the main characters. The questions are answered in the characters â€Å"voice†. 5. Letter There are many options in this response. Students may write a letter to a character, to the author, to the teacher, to a friend, to another student. In the letter they are asking questions or sharing ideas about what they have read. At times, certain letter types could be responded to in the same fashion as a Dialogue Journal. 6. Dialogue Journal Students reading the same novel work in pairs. They write a reflection to their partner in response to the novel. The following day, they exchange journals and write back to their partner. (Brownlie, 2005) 7.Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers such as KWL Charts, Mind Maps, Venn Diagrams, Timelines, Bar Line Graphs are used to assist students in constructing meaning from text. 8.Coding the Text There are a variety of coding techniques including the use of stickies or highlighting to target specific elements of text such as vocabulary, figurative language, and confusing parts of text, questions and memorable quotes. If specific letter/symbol codes are being used, they should be developed in collaboration with your students and clearly posted in your room. How do I assess my students’ journal responses? Teachers assess for content not conventions. Students must be part of the criteria setting process. This will enable students to set clear and realistic goals. Teachers may choose to examine journal entries as evidence of student writing at the draft stage. However, this does not mean that students cannot choose one of their responses to take through the writing process and publish at a later date. How do I build and use criteria with my students? Criteria are the standards by which something can be judged or valued. When we determine these criteria, we are deciding what counts. Teachers set criteria with their students. When students are involved in developing criteria, they are much more likely to understand what is expected of them, â€Å"buy in†, and then accomplish the task successfully. A four step process for setting criteria with students encourages student participation, understanding and ownership. The first three steps should be carried out before or as students are beginning their project or assignment. †¢Brainstorm †¢Sort and Categorize †¢Make and Post a T-Chart †¢Add, Reuse, Refine For further information on setting criteria, refer to Setting and Using Criteria. Copyright 1997. Kathleen Gregory, Caren Cameron, Anne Davies, Connections Publishing. How do I tie the Reading Continuum descriptors to my students’ journal responses? At every level of the continuum, there are descriptors that can be assessed by some type of journal response. For example, at the Expanding Level students should be able to â€Å"express opinions with evidence from the text†. In the journal response, the teacher should be looking for opinions supported with evidence from the text. The teacher should see evidence of this at least three times before noting this skill on the reading continuum.

Slavery :: Slavery Essays

Oppression and cruelty; just two of the many words used to describe slavery. However no word or words can be used to truly illustrate the hardships and tough times that the slaves went through. In the time of slavery, innocent people were taken from their homes and separated from their families to be sold as workers to people around the world. They did not just work, similar to modern times, they were restrained and held captive while being forced to work in terrible and unsuitable conditions. These people had dark skin, which the slave owners saw as an asset due to the fact that they could stay in the sun longer. In particular was a slave by the name of Olaudah Equiano, who wrote a personal narrative on his own experiences during slavery. In his writings, he did an excellent job in highlighting the oppression and cruelty in his own life and other peoples as well. The point of his narrative was to turn the English public against slavery. Based on what I have read, I can now give a cl earer opposition to slavery due to the fact that he has exemplified what slavery was really like. The idea of taking many, many people from their homelands and bringing them to a foreign place seems a bit over whelming. This seems like impossibility when looked at by the slaves’ point of view. During the times of slaves, the ships and such were not as advanced as they are now. They used wind and oars to power the boats. In addition, these boats were not being produced at a high rate. The point being the ships were so over crowded that it seemed pointless to ship slaves overseas. The slaves were put in these ships and packed into rooms that were not made to accommodate that many people. Equiano writes, "The closeness of the place, and the heat of the climate, added to the number in the ship, which was so crowded that each had scarcely enough room to turn himself, almost suffocated us" (p.56). This was how the slaves were kept when they were put under the deck. Enormous amounts of people packed into one small space. In this situation, one must think about the possible outcomes. If there are a lot of people, literally on top have on another, outbreak of disease will eventually occur- and of course it did.

Career pathways of three social care sectors Essay

Describe the roles, responsibilities and career pathways of three health or social care sectors Within this assignment I will be discussing three different health or social care professionals and describing their roles are and also their responsibilities. Social worker A social worker’s role is to help people with their issues and also their families, in order to help to adjust to the problems that are occurring throughout their lives. They most frequently work with those problems such as, child abuse, substance, abuse, mental illness, anti-social behaviour and many more. A social worker would specialise in a certain area and help a person with that certain situation.
